Fake Portal
What is Fake Portal?
Fake Portal is the online directory that bridges the gap between gamers and indie developers. Taking a two-fold approach—we help gamers discover fresh, new indie games while simultaneously helping small-team developers increase their exposure.Â
Â
Two truths are the driving force behind Fake Portal.
Â
Truth One: Indie developers are making incredible games but don’t have the marketing budgets of AAA studios. This makes competing against them very difficult.
Â
Truth Two: The process of discover new, exciting games is entirely too complicated. In many cases, the good games are simply too hard to find.
This is the solution. Welcome to the Fake Portal.
Who runs Fake Portal?
Fake Portal is owned and operated by Prototopics, LLC. Prototopics is the parent company of many of the exciting online brands you’ve come to know and love, most notably Fake Portal and YouTube’s Real Life Fake Wizard.Â
Â
This site is run by a dedicated, greatly appreciated Fake Portal team who are passionate indie gamers committed to supporting both gamers and indie developers alike.
Is Fake Portal Free?
Fake Portal is, and always will remain free to both gamers and developers. This site is entirely self funded as we continue to find new ways that maximize our impact on the gaming industry.
Â
However, keeping everything operational is expensive. If you’d like to help keep Fake Portal running, please visit SUPPORT FAKE PORTAL to do so.
Is Fake Portal affiliated with any major gaming companies?
No, we’re independent and focused solely on indie games, self-published or from small studios without big publisher backing.
What makes Fake Portal different from Steam or Itch.io?
Fake Portal acts like a discovery hub, a specialized directory of video games based on community-driven recommendations. We are not a storefront. There are no transactions on this website.Â
Â
Our operation resembles something closer to an education network, informing upon new games rather than an online store.
How do I buy games on Fake Portal?
Fake Portal is not a storefront, but an online directory. We help gamers identify games they would be interested in, and developers get better exposure for their games. As a result, games are not purchased directly from us. Each game listing will have direct purchase links to the various storefronts that each game is available (Steam, Itch.io, GOG, etc.)
How can I support The Fake Portal Mission?
While the platform it self is free to users and developers, the operations of the platform are very costly. Your support helps us maintain and scale, as well as offering new content, engagement opportunities and more. To learn more about how to support Fake Portal, please visit SUPPORT.
Does Fake Portal make their own games?
Fake Portal does not have their own games. We make it our missions to help showcase the amazing things that indie developers already in the space are doing. We prioritize getting exposure for everyone, over benefiting from a game of our own.Â
Where did the idea for Fake Portal come from?
Our team has spent countless hours traveling the country and talking to gaming fans just like you. After a few simple discussions we realized a major pain point for both gamers and developers was discoverability. Fake Portal is our answer to that problem and we are excited to watch this evolve, as we talk to more fans regularly.
I heard you have a Wizard on your team?
We do – You should get your own. They’re super fun.Â
Real Life Fake Wizard is one of our team members delivering on his promise to continue his fight against the AAA Gaming industry. Fake Portal wouldn’t be possible without the support and hard work the Real Life Fake Wizard does for us and we are thankful to have him. Thankfully, he doesn’t require much so we can keep him around for a while. A cup of Wizard’s Brew each day and he is satisfied!
Is Fake Portal available Worldwide?
Yes, both gamers and developers from around the world can use Fake Portal.
Please note that while the site and showcasing of games may be available worldwide, each game many be built with certain country restrictions and language support that may limit an individuals ability to play certain games. These decisions will be made by the developer and Fake Portal can not make changes to those limitations.
